On the next leg of the trip we headed for Jacobsbaai – a small settlement situated midway between Vredenburg and Saldanha Bay, about an hour-and-a-half drive from Cape Town along the scenic R27.
Building restrictions have preserved the breathtaking 2kms of coastline, with 7 bays and lime-washed houses against an azure blue sea.
As we discovered Jacobsbaai is well-known for its magnificent display of wild spring flowers. But not to be missed was the West Coast National Park, where to our delight we saw a proliferation of white daisies and other species of flowering plants. The highlight was the Postberg flower reserve section of the park where we saw carpets of spring flowers.
Another never-to-be-missed visit in the area was to Paternoster – one of the oldest fishing villages on the West Coast with its white-washed fisherman’s cottages. It is known for its lobster and many top restaurants serving the best cuisine – and for Redro fish paste developed by the Sephan family in the 1930s.
